This week, US Republican Senator Roger Marshall withdrew his backing for the highly debated Digital Asset Anti-Money Laundering Act of 2023 (DAAMLA), making him the first senator to retract from co-sponsoring the bill. Marshall initially collaborated with Massachusetts Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren to propose this legislation, aimed at strengthening the United States’ anti-money laundering regulations for digital assets. The bipartisan DAAMLA bill still has the support of 18 other co-sponsoring senators. This legislation seeks to expand the responsibilities of know-your-customer and anti-money-laundering verification to cover digital asset service providers, miners, validators, and other participants in order to fill existing security gaps in the cryptocurrency space. A part of the bill proposes new anti-money laundering review processes for the Treasury Department, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, requiring digital asset entities to comply with the Bank Secrecy Act.
