Recently, the Washington State Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) Securities Division received a complaint alleging that an individual had been a victim of a cryptocurrency scam while investing in what they believed to be the Miami Foundation Equity Fund 005. The investor joined a WhatsApp group led by “Mark” and “Alice,” where they were instructed to deposit funds into an inaccessible Vims.one platform. The group claimed that it could offer a return of over 100% on their investment, twice a week in cryptocurrency. However, despite paying a 5% withdrawal commission, the investor did not receive any funds. This incident highlights the existence of new forms of fraud, including social media-induced participation in prepaid fee fraud and cryptocurrency investment scams. Although the legitimate Miami Foundation was not involved in this case, this event serves as a reminder for investors to be wary of such fraudulent activities.
