In a recent post on social platform X, co-founder of Ethereum Vitalik Buterin addressed a user's query regarding the simplification of hash functions to discrete logarithms. He argued that such an approach is not advisable and conflicts with the cryptographic community's ongoing pursuit of quantum resistance. Vitalik emphasized that ensuring system stability and security through the one-time implementation and locking of the state tree is crucial. He further explained that resolving the discrete logarithm problem could potentially undermine existing encryption mechanisms, thus making it imperative to develop a hash function solution that can withstand attacks from both classical and quantum computing.
