House Republican Speaker Johnson issued a statement strongly recommending that U.S. President Biden should step down immediately after announcing his decision not to run for re-election. Johnson emphasized that if Biden is deemed unfit for the presidential campaign, he should also meet the same standards while serving as president. He stated that although over 14 million voters supported Biden, the Democratic Party's attitude toward the primary election results is questionable. As House Speaker, Johnson implied that he follows Vice President Harris in the line of presidential succession. The White House kept a low profile regarding the Republicans' appeal, stating that Biden will 'look forward to completing his term.' Senate Republican Leader McConnell also criticized the Democrats for attempting to ignore the will of the voters, but he did not call directly for Biden to resign.
