In a report released on July 31st, prominent critic of the cryptocurrency industry, Molly White, raised an accusation against Coinbase, alleging that the crypto exchange had made donations to a cryptocurrency Super PAC named Fairshake during negotiations for contracts with the US federal government. White argued that such actions seem to contravene the US campaign finance laws. However, in response to these accusations, Paul Grewal, Coinbase's Chief Legal Officer, swiftly rebutted them by stating that they were based on “misinformation”. He emphasized that, according to the literal language of Title 111.51 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Coinbase is not actually considered a federal contractor and therefore should not be subject to certain provisions of the campaign finance laws. Grewal's response aimed to clarify Coinbase's legal status while also refuting allegations about potential violations of campaign finance laws.
