In its 'Threat Assessment on Internet Organized Crime for 2024', Europol forecasts that the proliferation of AI technology will lead to a rise in cybercrimes carried out through such tools. The report highlights how the use of AI instruments enables non-experts to plan complex and efficient online criminal activities. Of particular concern is the extensive application of AI-generated deep fake technologies and false advertisements by malicious actors worldwide in targeting potential victims, which not only enhances the covert nature of these crimes but also significantly lowers the barrier to entry. In light of this serious challenge, Europol emphasizes the importance of strengthening research into relevant tools and strategy formulation to effectively combat the misuse of technology and safeguard the security and stability of the European financial system.
