Recently, Shaktikanta Das, the governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), stated that despite significant progress with the country's retail Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), which has over five million users, he calls for caution before full-scale promotion of CBDC. The plan for both retail and wholesale CBDCs was announced during the finance minister's budget speech in 2022, and pilot projects for both were launched by the end of that year. By the end of 2023, the retail CBDC had reached the milestone of processing one million transactions in a single day, showcasing its potential and market acceptance. However, Das emphasized the need to carefully consider factors when expanding the use of CBDCs to ensure stability and fairness. While advancing the development of CBDCs, RBI is also monitoring global trends in CBDCs, including projects from countries such as China and Sweden. Das pointed out that full-scale promotion of CBDCs requires a comprehensive consideration of technological maturity, legal regulations, and user privacy protection, among other aspects, to ensure that CBDCs can effectively serve public interests while maintaining the stability and security of the financial system.
