Thoma Bravo, a private equity firm managing approximately $160 billion in assets, has officially announced its permanent exit from the cryptocurrency market. Orlando Bravo, head of Thoma Bravo, revealed this decision during an interview with CNBC. The reasons behind the decision include setbacks in the company's investments within the crypto sector, particularly due to its association with the collapsed cryptocurrency exchange FTX. Thoma Bravo had participated in a $900 million investment in FTX in 2021. However, with FTX's collapse, Thoma Bravo and other investors faced significant financial losses and became embroiled in litigation alleging misleading statements were made in promoting FTX. This event severely damaged Thoma Bravo's reputation in the cryptocurrency market, prompting the company to decide to completely withdraw from the sector and focus on its traditional investment business.
