On September 13, an American pharmaceutical company, CelaCare, which focuses on drug research and production, announced that it had filed a lawsuit against stablecoin issuer Circle due to a loss of $1 million worth of USDC caused by a misoperation by its CEO, Kenneth Yates. According to CelaCare, on July 3, 2024, Yates attempted to transfer USDC from his Coinbase account but mistakenly replaced the letter 'B' with the number '8' in the address, resulting in the $1 million worth of USDC being sent to an unmanaged and inaccessible wallet address. In the lawsuit, CelaCare clearly stated that due to the nature of the transaction involving USDC, the funds were effectively "destroyed". Therefore, they requested the court to confirm that the funds have been destroyed and asked Circle to bear full liability for compensation. However, after receiving CelaCare's refund request, Circle rejected it on September 6, forcing CelaCare to take legal action to protect its rights.
