In a concerted effort, the Hong Kong Police Force and the banking sector have successfully cracked down on a cross-border money laundering syndicate operating across Hong Kong and the mainland. Through extensive investigations and cooperation, they pinpointed and dismantled this illicit network. In this operation, 14 suspects, aged between 23 and 50, were apprehended, with a total amount exceeding HK$18 million being seized. By carefully analyzing the flow of funds, it was revealed that the criminal organization had laundered HK$231 million worth of illegal funds between June and September, utilizing local bank accounts and cryptocurrency transactions. Assistant Superintendent Law Wai-san of the Commercial Crime Bureau divulged that since August, the police have been in close collaboration with banks, conducting a deep dive into suspicious bank accounts, ultimately exposing this cross-border criminal network. During the investigation, it was uncovered that the group received fraud proceeds from various parts of Hong Kong, amounting to HK$18 million, from job-seeking, telephone, and investment scams, and transferred these to secure channels in an attempt to circumvent legal consequences.
